so dived deep into the matter.

Must be said, the windows 7 audio sublayer is without any doubt the most 'accident prone' complex piece of engineering i've ever seen.

There are tons of layers between the actual hardware, the driver and the OS. In fact part of the OS encapsulates the hardware even before the driver get's it.

But the endresult (if and when it works) is excellent. Switching audioendpoints back and forth on the fly is a really big thing.
Hi Petrossa,

Thanks for that insight.

I always like to understand the backgrounds of things, and I didn't know that this audio engine is so complicated.
(by the way is it very different from Vista?)

Nevertheless the manufacturers had ample time to anticipate, because MS released enough builds to work on imho.

I am not convinced it isn't a tactical decision, because they have done it with every OS that MS made.

The reason they changed the audio base code and sublayer is that before the changes it was even more accident prone in Vista. It had the potential to cause system crashes if there was one tiny problem with the sound processing.

I'm lucky so far because my Asus Xonar drivers have worked since Win 7 came out.

Curiously enough i've never had any audio problems in vista on the same rig. Now i need to first set output to digital before setting it to analog otherwise only the left speaker works

Reason actually why i wrote the little app, so i could put it in a batch file.

But all things considered, it obvious to the naked eye that incorporating 'floating' endpoints adds to complexity not detracts. But i must admit it's about the single most important reason i use 7.

The best visualisation of the 7 audio layer is this:
