Windows 7: WMP does not play avi video

Thanks for clearing that up baarod - I was completely way off base with my supposition as to what you were doing with the AVIdemux.

Later this week I will get the RC installed and then I will try it your way and see how well it works - I have several DivX and MKV files that, if I can play natively, then I'll be a happy camper....

That's what I understand but I do not have any .mov file so I have not had a chance to try.

Oh dude, you've gotta try this then: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/561353/Di...echPreview.exe

DivX Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7 | DivX Labs - Everywhere Communication Occurs Community Happens

Basically works as Haali media splitter does for directshow but native to Media Foundation. Simply adds native support for .divx and .mkv files. Note: thumbnails work just not in 7100 right now. I'll up another version where that's working as soon as I get it.

I would recommend downloading avidemux, it's free and can convert almost anything to standard formats. Get it here http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/bin....4.4_win32.exe and convert your video to mpeg4 avc (h.264) in an mp4 container. I can post a tutorial on how to do this if there is a need.
Actually you can safely use the Windows 7 Codec Pack (Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs) since as he states "The Win7codecs package which I have created does not change or interfere with what Microsoft has going on concerning native codec support in Windows Media Player 12 and Media Center."

Because of that statement, this is the only codec Im happy to install. And it works well. He even produces 64-bit components.

That's great if you're happy with what amounts to essentially the old Microsoft technology stack virtually unchanged since Windows 98.
