Windows 7: volume controls itself. help please!

MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Im having the same problem, except for the browser being stuck in "back" mode. Sound fluctuates from violently loud to almost-nothing quiet. Very annoying since I play many games and music with sound on.

I think the sound fluctuations have something to do with my 5.1 surround sound system I have. Right now only two speakers and the bass work, even though in the testing all 5 speakers make the proper sound. I read somewhere else that the sound fluctuations are related to the sound trying to play in all 5 but unable to.

If anybody has a solution to this problem, please help! Its been a bother for over a year now.

Also, the problem was present when I was using my old system, a Dell Dimension 4700 Desktop from 2005. The problem has seemed to carry over to my whole new system (speakers, monitor, keyboard, and mouse are the only things from the previous system).

Here are the specs of my new system, hopefully somebody can point out a flaw somewhere:

I once worked on a laptop that had issues with random windows opening, menus dropping down and other odd interface problems.

Turned out it was heat related, specifically, the processor and/or possibly the mainboard chipset. I was never sure which one because they were both cooled by the same fan system. The fan was multispeed but the only speed that worked was low, as soon as the machine generated enough heat for the fan to notch up, it would turn off!

Anyway, temperature might be something to check, perhaps it's heat related.

The only other thing I can think of that would mess with the volume control is a background app like Real Audio or Possibly Winamp.

After a reboot I would use task manager to shut down all but the basic processes Windows needs to operate... especially any nVidia processes -and- nvidia services.

W7 64 bit

I have the same Gateway system and the same problem exactly. More than just the volume control and browser, but all programs that exhibit the problem "stutter" as if someone is banging on a key. I did find that if I put the PC to sleep and wake it up, the problem is gone for a while.

Are you still there?

Is this problem solved? Didn't sound like it.

I have this problem, but I traced it to particular applications. If I restart the computer it goes away until I start one of those applications. I think it's an application-based problem.

You response?
