USB headphone/mic vs speakers

Is there any way to make my external speakers and USB headphones work simultaneously, or at least have it where plugging in the headphones makes them work and turns the speakers off?

The way it is right now, I have to open the Sound control panel and click the "Set Default" button to switch between either one.

I'd rather have it where both are on simultaneously, and then I can just use the controls on the speaker them off when I don't want them. If that isn't possible, then how about having it where the I just plug in the USB headphones, and then they work.

Having to open up a control panel every time I want to swap between headphones and speakers is a royal pain.

Thanks.

Welcome to the sevenforums! gsalter

And welcome to the trip into the CP each time headache. I had that problem plus the mic on a web cam overriding the mic on a usb headset here going back and forth between the default recording as well as default speakers settings. Back and forth and back and forth at first removing the web cam entirely for both Skype and the WLive messenger.

Actually when changing over between speakers and the headset you simply right click on the volume control icon in the system tray there and select "playback devices" rather then the need to open up the Control Panel each time. That's a fast shortcut for resetting the defaults.

Actually to get both the front and rear jacks to work at the same time you need to go to the realtek audio manager icon (may be hidden), right click and choose Sound Manager. On the right side will be the pictures of all the audio jacks. In the upper right of that section is a folder that will say Connector Settings when you mouse over. Click that folder and select Disable Front Panel Jack Detection. Now both outputs will be hot at the same time.

This works when using the PC's standard 3.5mm jacks, plugging in headphones to the front of the PC does indeed turn the speakers off.

When using USB, the computer sees it as a completely separate audio I/O device so the interaction between the two systems is lost. (I'm guessing here because I don't have a USB Mic)

Use Night Hawk's shortcut or make a shortcut for "Sound" on your desktop.

I have 2 sets of USB headphones, Sennheiser PC135 and Logitech G35 and when I plug either one in, it automatically turns off the speakers.

It's been this way with XP, Vista 64, and now with Win7.

what headset do you have?

what headset do you have?

Are you using the Motherboard audio?

I wonder if it's a matter of setting the USB headphones as the Default device so that whenever they're plugged in it defaults to the headphones, when they're not plugged in a falls back to the Speakers?

I am currently using onboard audio since my Audigy 2 ZS stopped working when I installed my HD5850 video card last week.
It still operates the same way, plug in the USB headsets and the speakers turn off.

I have a solution here:

Scuba's Random Musings: Enabling and disabling USB devices with a simple Windows shortcut

It takes about 30 minutes to setup, but then yields a very fast way to switch between a USB-based headset and speakers.
