What is the default microphone level in W7

Just bought a new headset yesterday and after testing to make sure it worked I put it away. I went to use it today and no one could hear me over Ventrillo. My microphone level was set at 0 (which may be by default) and I had to set it to 100 to get a decent sound level . Basically I want to know if I should return this thing for a malfunction of some sort or if they are supposed to be set at 100. Thanks.

Some devices install a Mic Boost, have you checked for that.

Right click the MS Speaker Icon in the System Tray. Select Recording Devices, select your Microphone then click on the Properties Button, select the Levels tab, is there a Mic Boost located there? Most Mics need an input level boost. While there, select the Enhancements tab, disable all enhancements.

Also, same as above except select the Playback Devices tab, go to the Communications Tab and select "Do Nothing"

    Ap

p.s. if a change has no effect go back to the default setting. (Might want to see what Enhancements are inabled for the Playback Devices.)

That levels tab is exactly the one I'm talking about. There is a level bar and a mute button on the left. What is that bar supposed to default at. Nothing on that page says boost so I don't know where its supposed to be.

There is no default level, use whatever works. If 100 is what's needed and works ok, I wouldn't worry about it. Each Mic is going to be different.

I guess it depends on the driver, your mic probably uses the standard Windows drivers so there is no Mic boost option. The fact that there is a Mic boost option tells me that most microphones need some kind of boost, setting your Mic input to 100 could be considered normal.

This pic is from my Realtek internal audio....

p.s. I don't use a mic, the volume setting of 20 was arbitrary.
