Do you still have an M-Audio unit, which one is/was it?

I just took a look at Audacity (it's been a while) and it looks like that and your internal audio system should work ok.

In a previous post you needed a jack to try mic-in. How is mic-in and different than line-in?

I just recorded some guitar using onboard audio and line-in (I have a preamp) in Audacity.. worked much better than I expected?

The problem I see... is getting a decent Microphone plugged in for vocals.

You could always purchase one of those small mini-mixers, that would give you a decent line-out for guitar and a mic-preamp high/low impedance connector as well.. this is providing your internal audio chip is working.

So, get your guitar plugged into the Mic-in jack, set the Mic as default input an see if you can record a few tracks.

As far as an external interface and recording software like Cubase... there is going to be a learning curve, it's true on all platforms... once you start using software designed for pro-use (Cubase, Sonar..etc) even the light version takes some time getting the hang of. But... you get quality audio and many options, that's usually the trade off.

If the guitar have a mini amp (got a battery), then plug it into the Line-in port, if the guitar only have pickup mechanism, use mic in since mic in have volume booster... Did you try my suggestion? I recorded a test tone several times already using my soundcard's mic in, not a single problem...
