I had to upgrade my Realtek drivers before the hidden devices (stereo mix) would show up in W7.
After that .. It was easy.

FWIW .. I've heard that some Dell users have a problem getting the drivers to do this in XP or Vista.

    Try TotalRecorder

If your sound driver doesn't allow you to record what you hear (It's a new "feature" of Windows since Vista) you can use TotalRecorder (Sound recording tools: Total Recorder - captures any audio from the Internet, records audio from CD, microphone, line-in, converts any sound formats to WAVE file. Phone recording system.) Standard Edition. It worked very well for me. I used to use Audacity under Windows XP (and I will continue for the editing work).

If you are using the RealTek integrated audio, this fix has worked for me. Go to Control Panel - Sound - Recording; then right click below Line-in and Microphone. Select Show Disabled Devices. Right click on Stereo Mix and Enable. This will enable the Windows Sound Recorder. It also enabled my Nero wav editor recorder and Audacity recorder.

Windows 7 "What you hear"/"Stereo Mix" FIX!!

The Problem: Ok so after a lot of soul searching and trial 'n' error I fixed my issue. I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium edition and when I went into recording devices > right click > show disabled I still wasn't getting the stereo mix to come up.

The Fix: So what I did was go into the program that I was using to record my sounds (Adobe Soundbooth CS3). Check out the devices that I had selected in there and it was on the default settings (Soundbooth 1.0 windows sound). All I did was change this to (Creative ASIO) and it worked!

Conclusion: For those of you who aren't getting the stero mix option like I wasn't. Check to make sure that whatever program you use (Soundforge, Cakewalk, etc..etc..) has its audio/recording device settings set to your soundcard.

Hey I am having the same problem exact problem with all sound cards on Windows Vista and Windows 7. I had a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum Pro and What U Hear 'does' appear, but when I record, the quality is terrible and not identical, unlike XP. I bought a Sound Blaster X Fi Elite Pro to upgrade my old Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum Pro, hoping that it would improve, but no, it doesn't, its still the same.

However, I think Leothelion2003 is right, We should start using the ASIO since Microsoft changed the audio stack in later versions of Windows, which in my opinion, is stupid. However, its sad because I still use Goldwave 4.26, a software which I find the best recording and playback software, can't do good recordings anymore unlike other new software which DOES support the ASIO feature. ASIO is very good with audio recordings and I think I will start using that from now on.

I am still sticking with XP though since I am used to it and the audio features are better.
