Volume mixer: way to create a shortcut to mute an app?

Hey there. I was wondering if there is a way to create a shortcut to mute/unmute (or 2 shortcuts: one for each function) an specific application. For example, I am constantly muting/unmuting Firefox because I am listening to music most of the time, but when I need to listen to something I gotta open the mixer, click, blah blah. Maybe there's something I can add to the line "C:\Windows\System32\SndVol.exe" or something like that.

Google yields lots of possibilities: shortcut to mute sound

One of them should do what you want.

Yeah, I googled, but most of those are for XP and not for the Vista/7 Volume Mixer, plus those are mostly to mute the main volume.

I don't believe there is any way to mute sound for a single application unless the application itself provides a way to do it.

Actually, Windows 7 allows us to mute single application (any process, not only your application itself) by WASAPI, but you still need someone to build a little program for it.

Could just leave the mixer open?

So you mute the main volume. That sounds like what you said you wanted to do originally, using FireFox as your example. It what do what you wanted, wouldn't it?

No, I don't believe that was what he was looking for. He wanted to only mute firefox while not having to mute everything else.

I'm looking for the same thing. I'd like to be able to listen to iTunes while opening flash videos in firefox (so that those videos can buffer) without the videos' sounds clashing with the music (before I can pause the videos, that is). Or play flash games while listening to iTunes without having the games' sounds conflicting with the music.

The Volume Mixer does this, which I've pinned to the taskbar, but this takes up valuable real estate and requires two mouse clicks. Ideally I'd like a shortcut that directly mutes firefox which I could trigger with a keystroke or incorporate into an AutoHotkey script.
