Will Avira alone suffice?
What kind of problem were you having. I run Avast Free and CDBurnerXP on my Win 7 64bit system with no problems.

Looking into it. Presumably that applies to the Windows 7 desktop as well as Virtual XP?
It refers to a desktop with 7 or Vista..
Well anyway, I've done that in Virtual XP, Windows-7 and the other machine which runs ordinary XP SP2.

All appears well, many thanks

You will be very happy with MSE, Malwarebytes and the Windows Firewall. Good luck

Hi, Cheemag.

As to "the other machine" you need to update it to XP SP3 as SP2 is out of support and not receiving updates. For example, the recent out-of-band update did not include an update for Windows XP, SP2. (See MS10-046 Released Out-of-Band Today)

Download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's better than Avira AntiVir.

I know, I know, but I have a very expensive application which I suspect will not run in SP-3, nor will it run in Windows-7 ... I suppose I could alway set the system back to SP2 from an Acronis image if that expensive programme really failed to run under SP3, although it would probably set me back several days at least.

Hi, Cheemag.

Have you tried the "expensive program" on the Virtual XP install?

The 5000 Euro programme, yes it works well in both Virtual and real XPs.
