Okay thanks guys, I think I just find it hard to believe that they (MS) is offering something for nothing. It begs the question why do the other antivirus people bother to keep going if they offer no better protection than MS security essentials
There are lots of things out there offered for nothing, from many companies, including Microsoft. The intention of MSE was to provide "basic" A/V protection for a person who would be otherwise unwilling to pay for it. However, it seems that the product has worked better than anticipated and scores very well and is endorsed my many techies. It's the product that I use for a number of reasons...mainly because I don't put myself into risky situations so I don't need super strength and because it's not in your face at all.

There is still marketspace without a doubt for the commercial pay for products. Some people need more functionality or more protection. Businesses often use these products for their centralized management functionality. Finally, 3rd parties might purchase lower cost licenses and include these products with their offerings. Like McAfee or Norton from an ISP.

    Hi runestaff,
To protect yourself from the evils of the internet your basic protection should include

*Anti Virus Program [ MSE is popular & is used by many people here]
    *Anti Malware Program
    *Firewall
    *Router / firewall

It is important you update programs & scan regularly.

You are advised to exercise caution with what you click on.
Don’t engage in activities such as file sharing, warez cracks, adult content, online gambling or other high-risk behaviors.

MSE caught several things my "paid" McAfee did not.

MSE & Malwarebytes are good programs. A good firewall is also a must have.

For Gods sake, do NOT get McAfee.....if you need convincing, see the following post

I fully agree that the McAfee AV program is for the birds. In contrast, the McAfee Site Advisor does a very good job and is in no way a pain.

Not in McAfee's case when they released their last "update".

I rolled the system back 2 days before it hosed my system and their "update" damaged the files so bad, that when I launched the "Security Center", only 2/3 of it was showing & I couldn't get to any of the buttons to reset it.

    That's pretty bad!

And it's not the first time McAfee's products have done something like, I dunno, corrupting a system by thinking perfectly normal system files are viruses, etc. To top it off, sometimes their workarounds are crap too after they've broken your system. I am not a fan of McAfee or Symantec (and a few others, like Trend) after watching them bloat over the years and cause numerous problems with their filter drivers, script scanners, kernel hooks, etc., but if you *had* to choose one or the other I would still recommend Symantec (not Norton, Symantec). However, if you have more choice, products like Avast, Microsoft SE or Forefront, Kaspersky, Panda, etc. are all much better than these. MSE is my personal preferred package (because they offer support above and beyond a newsgroup or forum, and the detection rates are very good), but you should use the one that suits you. I used to use Avast and it was a great product, but MSE is just easier to use, does as good a job, and costs the same .

    Well said Dampkring.
This thread has gone way off topic.

    Missing you

I wake up, I think of you.
I watch the ceiling, I think of you.
I open my eyes, I think of you.
I close my eyes, I think of you.

    I want to do nothing.
To stay in my bed and to say nothing.
    Because nothing can explain
How I miss you, my darling.

    Life is sad without you.
And I realize you are a plant
    Which grows in my heart.
    A reason to live.

This morning my silence is gold.
Because you are in my thoughts,
I smile because we are in love.
But in fact I cry, you are not here.
