August 2010 Virus Bulletin Results Summary

The results have been posted for the August 2010 VB Tests.

From Virus Bulletin : VB100 award - latest comparative

VB100 - Windows Vista Business Edition Service Pack 2

With another epic haul of 54 products to test this month, the VB test team could have done without the bad behaviour of a number of products: terrible product design, lack of accountability for activities, blatant false alarms in major software, numerous problems detecting the WildList set, and some horrendous instability under pressure.
Bolded below are some interesting failures from the summary, located at Virus Bulletin : VB100 results summary. If these products failed on Windows Vista, does anyone think they would do any better on Windows 7? I don't.

    Failures:

    BitDefender
    CA Business & CA Consumer
    Digital Defender
    eEye
    eScan
    Fileseclab
    Gdata
    Kingsoft Advanced & Standard
    Lavasoft Total Security
    McAfee & McAfee Total Protection
    Norman
    Preventon
    Qihoo
    Rising
    VIRUSFighter Pro

    hi !

    THANKS Corrine !

    very interesting reading.
among the free A/V´s Avira, Avast & MSE got "VB100", as usual....
i attached 3 screenshots showing the results.

did you notice that Emsisoft also got a "VB100" ?

for those that doesn´t already know it, a-squared (a2) is now renamed to Emsisoft Anti Malware (EAM)...

BitDefender failed because of 15 false positives, however, it is usually low on false positives as can be seen on AV-Comparatives tests. It did once have very bad false positives.

G Data failed because it uses the BitDefender engine along with the Avast! engine.

MSE has been tested three times, failing once.

    Thanx for the info everyone

Of course McAfee would be on the list...I have 1st hand experience with that...unfortunately

I did read an interesting article a while back, if I find it, I'll post it, but apparently the "wild list" they use for determining the rankings is somewhat outdated in most cases and they are slow to add to the list the newer variants. The article said that since this list is so circulated, almost all AV companies test good since they have access to that list and results are based on that.

I have high regard for Alex Eckelberry and my old friend Patrick Jordan/Webhelper as well as Chris Boyd/Paperghost and Eric Howes. However, I don't know how the acquisition by GFI Software will impact Sunbelt Software. GFI is enterprise-oriented rather than consumer.
