Go with Comodo Firewall imo it's the best firewall and most reviews rate it as the best.

Just disable Windows Firewall, and if you want disable the Windows Firewall service.

Comodo gives you much better control over programs and if you set it up right it can be a lot more secure- and it's fast and clean.

I personally use the Firewall only without any of the advanced HIPS- too many annoying messages I don't need

Just to go back to question 3 of the original post

Windows firewall has a number of firewall pre-sets for different usage scenarios, such as Home, Domain, (work), or public, (Coffee Shop Etc.).

This settings mirror the Network types in The Network and Sharing Centre, by selecting the network type in The Network and Sharing Centre you automatically select the related firewall pre-set. This allows you to have the firewall on in a public network but off in a home network.

I would class Comodo firewall as highly recommended with the proviso that you take time to fully understand it's operation as it is more complex and powerful than many others.

Saying this if you are running behind a modern router with NAT then the windows firewall is adequate

Windows firewall is adequate if you're behind a router, in actual fact you don't even need a software firewall really, but Comodo lets you block certain apps easily, and you can block access to certain ports e.g. Torrent programs below port 1025 and block IPs rather than just allowing all connections from a program

I recently d/l ed & installed Comodo firewall. From what I'm seeing, it is a good firewall, but it has many settings that can be confusing in some instances.

I personally prefer something that gives you control over individual programs and if they are allowed to access the net.

If you would like to fully investigate all the features of Comodo Firewall, I suggest you d/l this document and read through it. It is a detailed explanation of all the settings and how to configure them.

To block an application from accessing the internet with Comodo is easy- Click the Comodo tray icon, click firewall, then click define a new blocked applicaton :)

The best tip for Comodo is to set it in training mode for a day or three when first installed and use the system as normal.

this cuts out a lot of pop-ups when using the system day to day

There's nothing wrong with Comodo. Zone alarm is also fairly good, but I stopped using it a few years ago because Comodo is better, IMO. Whichever one you choose, be sure to disable the windows firewall to avoid conflicts
