    When legitimate websites "outscore" adult sites, 5 suggestions for safer surfing

    The days of computer viruses announcing themselves with poorly designed flashing banners, misspelled words, and risky content are over (at least for now), replaced by ultra-subtle methods that, without the best antivirus software, are often undetectable. A summer 2010 study by the avast! Virus Lab revealed that even the ‘dodgy’ or ‘adult’ websites are no longer the trendiest targets for hackers. By filtering out particular search terms, the lab found instead that viruses infecting legitimate websites – such as major hotel chains and telecommunications providers – were by far the majority. According to AVAST Software CTO Ondrej Vlcek, "the statistics are clear – for every infected adult domain we identify, there are 99 others with perfectly legitimate content that are also infected."
