    AVG question

Im doubtful any of you would know but i was updating WOW allnight, (installing) then this morning avg said there was malware detected, i pressed the wrong button and now the blizzard wow updator is quarantined , anyone know how to un-quarantine it?

    "10/10/2010, 08:48:22";"NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM";"IDP";"Process WOW-3.2.0.10192-TO-3.3.0.10958-ENGB-DOWNLOADER.EXE was quarantined."

I haven't used AVG in over a year but if I remember correctly the procedure is as follows:

    - Open AVG user interface.
    - Choose "Virus Vault" option from the "History" menu.
    - Locate the file that was incorrectly removed and select it (one left click).
    - Click on the "Restore" button.

If this was a false positive AVG likes to know about it so they can update their virus signatures. The old email address was virus<at>avg.com but you should be able to find the most current address in your help link.

Also, you might find additional information at FAQ # 2870, "Restoring Incorrectly Deleted Files".

If it's not in the virus vault it's possible that AVG actually deleted it instead of putting it in quarantine. You could try using a free recovery tool like Recuva. It's made by the same folks who made CCleaner.

AVG has many false positives. I would recommend replacing it with MSE.

If you can't recover the file you could also try a repair install of WOW. Don't uninstall anything, just run the installation a second time and let it over-write any damaged or missing files it detects. It should run a lot faster than the original install.

I'd also agree with Francis93 about replacing AVG with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's lightweight and it's an all-purpose product providing real-time protection for your PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. You could also supplement MSE with Malwarebytes free as an additional on-demand scanner.
