I think the question is can you run two real time protection AVs without conflicts arising? I've always understood that this is inadvisable, J
John, Avast and MSE can run simultaneously with no problems. There are other exceptions to that rule, too. But generally speaking, you are correct.

I concur; I think the only danger is system slow down.

well i think that as i have seen no slowdown,
( though i will keep a close eye on performance for a while.)
I shall continue to use both and maybe update this thread from time to time ....unless i hear otherwise.
Thank you all for your comments and your interest.

    Section I

We've noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware both running real-time protection on Windows XP at the same time have a tendency to cause your computer to freeze. It's possible that this happens in 32-bit editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, but they have really only been tested together on the 64-bit editions of those operating systems. Below is detailed a quick solution to any potential freezing issues (performing these steps is a must for Windows XP users).

You've got 4GB of RAM so I really doubt you'll notice any performance decrease

i would say that i installed MBAM alongside norton as norton was at the end of its trial and start up took ages there was a black screen just after the password and as soon as i uninstalled Norton it ran fine no slow start up at all. so i think the combo works for me .

Well, Stephen is knowledgeable but his area of expertise is as a Windows Live MVP.

Yes, it is a general rule of thumb to only have one real-time protection program active to prevent conflicts. That said, boohbah, I have frequently had antivirus and anti-malware real-time protection as well as WinPatrol PLUS active at the same time with no consequences.

You're welcome, boohbah. I'm sure you'll keep a watch both for performance issues as well as possible conflicts. Let us know if you see either one.

If I may add a little. There are some combination of active programs that work together but that isn't the point. If you children don't do as there told all those programs put together won't stop downloads. Once the young ones get a little computer knowledge all the programs won't stop them. User Account Control can help. This site from Microsoft might be of help.
