They are so many in number, nobody could possibly make a comprehensive list. But here are a few things you can do to keep safe.

    1) Install a good antivirus with real time protection. Among the free ones, MSE, Avast and Avira are popular. Among the paid ones theres NIS and Kaspersky among others.

    2) Download and install the freeware Malwarebytes. Its an on-demand scanner you can update and run from time to time.

    3) Make sure you have some sort of firewall enabled- whether windows firewall or a 3rd party like Comodo or Zonealarm. Many experts here trust winpatrol.

    4) Try not to click on random popups and ads or visit too many shady sites. Software downloaded from torrent sites also often carry malware.

    5) Make sure windows updates run regularly- you can adjust them to the setting of your choice.

    6) Dont click on suspicious email attachments.

    7) Keep UAC enabled on your computer- people sometimes complain its inconvenient but it can really save your bacon.

I've been running Win 7 for almost 2 years, between beta and retail and i can't name any common attacks on Win 7. UAC on, MSE antivirus, Malwarebytes once a month, Windows firewall and router, good common sense and you will be fine

Sorry didn't realize it was for a degree, i misunderstood.
    1. popup's from websites can carry keyloggers
    2. email attachments can carry virus's or trojan's
    3. torrent sites can carry unknowns in their downloads
    4. firewall off allow intruders without you knowing
    5. UAC off, no warning when a program tries to install something you didn't ask for

That's all i can think of offhand, hope this helps

Its not a homework exactly...in the final semester of our studies here in greece we have to do a degree assignment in order to get our degree..So i was given Windows 7 security as a subject and we have to analyze The most common windows 7 attacks, what they actually do and how they work and the means we need to counter them..And i have to write 100 pages for that...Thanks for the help guys appreciated it!!!I was searching for days and the only think i could find is DDoS , POD's , Zero-Day Attacks and i'm not sure those are only window's seven problem i think they are network attacks...anyways if someone else has an opinion on the subject i would be glad to hear his though and share his knowledge :P:P thanks

There are common attacks used on every Win OS. Although Win 7 has remedied a lot of the problems and is a safer OS then it's predecessors, new exploits are discovered every day and software, issued by other companies is a potential entry into Windows if exploits in those are discovered. Attack methods include:

Social Engineering - (ie., calling and claiming to be someone at the company, stating you forgot your password, log in, etc)

A Myriad of viruses including Stealth viruses, Macro viruses & Polymorphic viruses

    Worms and Trojan Horses.

Logic Bombs (Generally left behind by workers who have been terminated)

Password attacks including Brute Force, Password Guessing & Dictionary

You also have Buffer Overflow (software), spoofing, IP Spoofing, DNS spoofing & ARP Cache Poisoning.

Other internet attacks include DDos, SYN Flood
(also called a TCP SYN attack), Fraggle attack, Ping of Death, Teardrop, Bonk, and Boink Attacks. As well as Backdoor, Man-In-The-Middle and TCP Session Hijacking. There's even one called a Smurf Attack. Serious...go look it up.

I'm sure there's lots and lots of others out there too.

It's a scary net out there. No such thing as being "Too paranoid"

(BTW...the really fun part of this is when you take the COMPTia Security +, you have to know the characteristics of each of these attacks)
