Starting in 2009 NIS has been vastly improved and has been rated as one of the best in competitive tests. I am running NIS 2011 and really like it. It has a feature called Identity Safe where it will store your logins and passwords and makes it easy to login to your sites. I trust it more than the browser password feature.

Seems like every few weeks (day?) we get someone asking what is the "best" AV program. The "best" anti-anything program is the one that works best for your computer. Whether you select a freebie like MSE or a paid version like NIS, just make sure it passes some basic tests like the EICAR Standard Anti-Virus Test File and the Spycar test files.

eicar | THE ANTI-VIRUS OR ANTI-MALWARE TEST FILE

Welcome to Spycar

In particular, make sure your anti-malware of choice can detect and isolate the bad stuff in a .zip file. If it can't pass either of the tests, dump it for something that can.

I am running NIS2011 and when I clicked on the Spycar link NIS blocked the site and showed 73 malicious files. I like the idea that it blocked me from going to the site.

I've used Norton, McAfee, AVG, and latterly ZoneAlarm Extreme. I installed MSE yesterday and it's using a lot less space on my hard disk, doesn't slow down the system performance, doesn't hassle me with messages about what it's checking or that it's time for an update and I should do it NOW, and was very easy to set up. It's available as a right click in context menus, carries out a 'quick scan' quickly and so far so good.

You really can't go wrong with Microsoft Security Essentials. It gets the job done, and for me I feel like i never know that it is even there.

In my opinion, yes. I wonder why you didn't ask before buying Norton.

Have you uninstalled Kaspersky and installed Norton yet?

Test your anti-malware/anti-virus protection with EICAR
As many of you know(quite a few don't) what EICAR is, this is a open poll to see what programs pick it up and what programs fail the basic tests. I am conducting this poll because A-Squared failed to see this on a scan, but MSE picked it up before it could be downloaded. So after you take...
