There have been a lot of issues surrounding AVG over the years, what with it marking critical system files as infected when in fact its clean. I suggest you have a look through the security news section to get some idea.

My personal recommendation is MSE 2 or avast 5.

Used AVG for quite awhile but have found Avast superior and it is in all my PC's now.

    I'd prefer MSE 2, myself.

I used to swear by AVG back in the version 8 days. Then, it started getting buggy.
Complaints abounded all over the internet.

    Is MSE better?
If you're talking about its detection rate, then, probably not.
    If you're talking about a quiet, non-intrusive, light-weight anti-virus solution, then, definitely.

Everything in this world is give and take...

Here's a link to the Q4 reports on AV program stats: http://www.av-test.org/certifications?order=repair_desc〈=en

    Hope this helps!

    I suggest MSE 2 + BitDefender 2011 / Kaspersky 2011. . Google "top antivirus software". .

    MSE2 + MBAM + CCleaner + Windows Firewall
That's what I use plus Common Sense when surfing!

We (our computer club) had 6 systems, all triple booted, heavily infected - despite AVG being installed. Never again. We now use MSE.

Any of the top rated free A/V's is fine really. All have their own strengths and weaknesses.

But it's always handy to have other tools like Malwarebytes installed in conjunction with whatever AV you use.

    Hey Mitch,

AVG has had some issue recently, and like many I swore by it. I'm a Norton user myself, but my recommendations is to try MSE. If you combine that with MBAM (free) and SpyWareBlster (also free) and Windows Firewall, you will have good cover.

Bear in mind though, your best defence are your browsing habits.

    Regards,
