Considering no one has an AV that is close to 100% why not.

There would be half the problems we deal with on this forum if all the AV's worked at even close to 100%.

Because historically they have stepped on each others toes, caused performance issues, etc. Potentially it's causing the exact same problem that you and Francis93 are seeing right now.

Of course people could also obtain software through legal means as well and avoid P2P sites, crack/warez/keygen sites, and software torrents for pirated software and also reduce their problems significantly without having to use 2 AV programs concurrently.

My opinion of not running 2 AV's might help to alleviate the problems you are experiencing. Others of us, who do not run 2 AV's don't seem to have this issue. Like you said, it was fine before, but now with a recent update it's not fine. Perhaps this new update triggers a problem caused with 2 AV products running concurrently.

Perhaps I missed the point of your thread....was it
1). A heads-up that MSE and Avast don't play nice together anymore and thus you shouldn't use 2 AV's at the same time ( I agree with that)
2). Please tell me how to get these 2 products to work together perfectly (to which I didn't help you admittedly, because it seems like a questionable idea).

With regards to detection rates being less than 100% for any AV product...unless you obtain 100% of the problems on the web, it doesn't really matter if you software doesn't catch 100% of them. As long as the ones that you do get, are caught..you should be just fine.

I still find it hard to believe that somebody runs with 2 AV's and finds that Product #1 caught (5 threats) and Product #2 caught (4 entirely different threats). Thus meaning that they had 9 threats total with Product #1 catching 55% of them and missing 45%, while Product #2 caught the other 45% of them and missed the remaining 55%.

But I would hope that in the course of using a computer for say 6 months, that regardless of how many AV's you have that it's going off 9 times. I would hope that 3 times in a 6 month period of time would be high for most people. I would think the overwhelming majority of single application AV scanners are likely going to catch those 3 instances.

Again it's just personal experience. I just find that I might catch 1 or 2 things over a couple of years. It seems like the extra resources and having to keep 2 products updated and working well together exceeds the benefits gained. I guess there are some who put themselves into extra risky scenarios though and have determined that they need more products installed.

The two of us having the problem have deleted the MSE and just running Avast.

MSE still doesn't work. Which was the point of the thread.

    I'm still confused.

You deleted MSE and now just have Avast. I am with you this far.

Then you say, "MSE still doesn't work". Meaning that you have installed it again alongside Avast...or that you have removed Avast and are just running MSE and it's still broken?".

I'm trying to understand why you might be running 2 AV's together and also trying to explain that perhaps if you had just 1 or the other, that you might not be having this problem.

Running two anti-virus programs is indeed a bad idea. They are resource hogs and will fight each other for your system's resources. They also have the ability to detect each other's virus definitions ....

I always suggest installing one anti-virus program and use another 'online' scanner. These are 'free' scanners.
    Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner
HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan - Trend Micro USA
    BitDefender Online Scan
    F-Secure Online Virus Scan
    DrWeb Web Scanner

There are significant issues with MSE that have nothing to do with multiple anti virus programs clashing.
Imaging and general zip style backup are close to the top of the food chain. When a security subsystem fouls up a backup capability (and one of it's own!!) it's time to get rid of it (in my opinion).

Absolutely and if I noticed those issues, I would get rid of it as well. Especially when it's a free product and you don't have money invested. I do my backups using robocopy to move files to external drives and image with Acronis and haven't had issues myself with MSE. I run Avast on my wife's Vista laptop though as MSE wasn't out at the time and Avast has worked well for her with few popups.

When it comes to upgrades MSE is complete crap

EVERY time it prompts me to upgrade I cringe and it's always warranted. Now MSE is no longer working on my machine after a "You may be Unprotected upgrade" prompt from MSE.

The application won't launch from my start menu and no longer is in my system tray after upgrading/rebooting

    I don't get it

Tried running Windows Update (which has this upgrade)

    Error - 0x80070643

why am I not surprised? Every upgrade requires doing some technical support which usually is just messing around until I can make it work.

Is this the quality of an AV MS has in mind?

any foolproof solutions to this error?

    thanks in advance

It's not even located in add/remove programs and I never uninstalled it?

So the MSE upgrade uninstalls it without allowing a reinstall?

    yeah, that's an upgrade

So when installing it says to uninstall other AV programs - but yet my machine says my AV status isn't on right now, so what is it MS? I have AV or I don't?

Ran System restore - ran update and MSE is back to green. Not sure what build it should be though

But now I'm getting a 80072EFD error with Windows Updates - awesome.

    So onto fixing this...

    Windows Update error 80072efd

Nope - back to "Potentially Unprotected" while running a scan

Checked Windows Update and it says I'm up to date.

What is going on with this?!?

    I haven't a clue.

I dumped the MSE and using Avast.
