    Norman Security Suite

    Hi Guys,

    I have 2 questions.

    1) Does it mean that if I install Microsoft Security Essential on my laptop, I do not have to install other 3rd party security software?

    2) I have recently installed Norman Security Suite that comes free when I purchased my laptop. However, I released that my laptop lags even when I open my normal documents, not to mention the IE browser. I have done cleanup manually in msconfig to get rid of unnecessary services and minimal programs are installed on my laptop.

Anybody uses Norman here? Do you encounter the same issue? I am using windows 7 home edition with 2G Ram.

Probably not Norman causing the lag but I would change to MSE anyway. Your lag is probably because of your limited ram and 64 bit

So I can just use MSE alone as antivirus?

Yes and use the win 7 firewall. with only 2 gigs of ram win 7 32 might be a better choice unless you plan to upgrade your ram.

I see. Thanks. Anyway there is no way to down my OS to 32-bits as it already comes as 64-bits, am I correct?

I have thought of getting addition 2G Ram (OEM), but if I do that, I have to open my laptop Ram cover at the back and this will break the warranty sticker that is pasted to cover on the screws and thus will void my warranty. So I didnt increase the Ram.

I would remove norman security suite as it is just an average protection software. Use MSE as a temporary until Avast! V6 is released. It would probably be the best free anti-virus you can get because they will include sandbox and script protection that was available in the Pro version only into the free version. It will also have some new feature such as SiteBlocking included.

I see. That's cool. Thanks for the information. Does it slow down your PC with these new features?

As far as i can, avast has always been light with low cpu and resource usage. It's a lot lighter and scan way faster than mse. Should try MSE and Avast! on your system. See which one you like better and give it a go. But personally i would choose Avast! since it doesnt eat alot of CPU while doing a scan which can make your PC very sluggish and scanning time is very slow.

Hi I have removed Norman a few days ago when there is no response after I clicked on scan computer. Tried rebooting my PC and still the same

Thereafter, I installed MSE and it's working fine so far. I noticed MSE is straight forward and comes with very basic features. I have also downloaded avast V6 but its a beta version i guess. Yet to try.

However, I am pondering if everyone uses freeware antivirus, then where is the business for other antivirus programs?
