    Windows defender boot message

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, which disabled Windows Defender. I am happy with that. But every time I boot, I get a message that says Windows Defender has been turned off, and I have to click something. How can I kill that message?

Type services.msc in the start search box. Click on the icon to bring up the services window. Scroll down to Windows Defender, right click, choose properties, set it to 'disabled' and stop the service.

Reboot and see if you get the message again.

Hello Xpda, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You may be able to turn off this message in Action Center if it's a Action Center message that you are getting.

Action Center - Change Message Settings

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

It's not in the startup listing.

Launch regedit (Win+R, type "regedit", hit Enter). Locate the Key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane delete Value "Windows Defender"

Also check for that value in this key.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thanks! I just discovered that myself and deleted the key. That solved the problem.

Windows Defender was listed in System Information, System Summary, Software Environment, Startup Programs, with a -hide flag:

    Code:
    Windows Defender %programfiles%\windows defender\msascui.exe -hide Public HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
-hide must be why it didn't appear in msconfig or System Configuration.

    Thanks for your help!
