    Micro. Sec. Ess. Causing Crashes?

Since installing the new Microsoft Security Essentials beta, I have been getting "program ceased working" crashes. So far, desktop gadgets, Firefox, and WMP have experienced this.

I suspect this is caused by the new security system, but that's only a guess so far. My system also takes 20 - 30 seconds to find the internet on start-up, as compared to 2 - 3 second before installing the beta.

Anybody else seeing these problems since installing the beta A/V?

Now that you mention it, two of my gadgets would not launch (Well they launched but never appeared on screen) last night after installing it a day or two ago.

BUT that has happened to me before, BUT I have not seen it happen in the last few weeks. If it continues to do so, MSE will be the 10th AV program I've installed unnecessariy found not one single thing wrong and eventually uninstalled when it starts causing problems I never had before. They are frequently as bad as having a virus anyway

(Before I get asked again, no routine AV use in 15 years and not one virus ever, safe computing is easy, Just Do It)

stevieray, what Firewall software are you using?

Also type Eventvwr, click on the icon, then look through the folders on the left. See what the event is that's causing the problem crashes.

I'm using the built-in Windows firewall.

I have not experienced these crashes or any errors from MSE, though you could try reinstalling (if you need the installer let me know) it again.

Although the recent opening for the real release is closed MS is gonna upgrade the beta version to the real version. RE: the crash you could go into event viewer and see what the errors say. type event event viewer in search launch event viewer and look thru the app tab to see if there are errors
    Hope this helps

Since it isn't generating a BSOD, there are no minidumps to check. In the event viewer, there is an error that seems to correspond with the crashes/shutdowns. It is a "CAPI2" error, and it says:

The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The error was: 1392 (0x570): The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable.

could you use the snipping tool (type snip into search) and upload a pic of what event viewer says exactly?

My gadgets just shut down a few minutes ago. Here's the snip of the event viewer:

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable ... uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials beta.

Where did you get the ISO download?
