Hi,
The scanner isn't memory resident and doesn't update automatically.
Microsoft Safety Scanner - Free online tool for PC health and safetyThe Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.
Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
The Microsoft Safety Scanner is not a replacement for using an antivirus software program that provides ongoing protection.
Regards,
Golden
As it has been mentioned it is stand-alone on-demand scanner.

Microsoft Safety Scanner, Free On-Demand Virus Scanner
Is their any point in running both the Microsoft Safety Scanner and
running Microsoft Security Essentials on the same data base.
If MSE is in use does MSS serve any purpose ?
Thanks
Richard
It never hurts to run scans, especially with the threats now out on the web.
You never know which malware/virus can slip though one AV. So therefore, it probably would be a good idea to run Microsoft Safety Scanner once a week or more depending on your preference.
