Got a Virus -- Help

I have a virus or something that just appeared on the W7 side, Iím on the XP side now. It says that my computer is infected and wants me to buy some anti-virus program. I canít get into the web and it will not let me run my anti-virus program. I started W7 in safe mode and ran Microsoft Essentialsí but itís still there. I went over to the XP side and ran AVG 2011 and that found nothing. HELP

Yep, that sounds like one of those phoney spyware-virus programs that lock you out.

Does it give you a name on the screen of the program they want you to buy.

Can you get ito Windows 7 Safe Mode ?

What do you mean by side? You can use Malware Removal Guide for Windows or I suggest you restart in Safe Mode with Networking because most malware are inactive during safe mode which would make it easier to any anti-malware program to detect them. Then, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run a FULL SCAN. After this is done, you will receive a log, copy it and paste it here. After you've done this go to SUPERAntiSpyware's website and download the free version; run a "Complete scan." For both of these, delete any file that is found as a threat.

Report back to us when you've done all this.

I will like to add that Microsoft Security Essentials gives only basic protection. Hence its name "Essentials."

Side= the hard drive is partitioned W7 on one side and XP on the other. I am on the XP side now and W7 side has the virus.

Yes I can get to the safe mode but it will not let me get into the internet.

Currently I am running something from Microsoft that is scanning for Malicious Software. I’m running it from the XP side so I don’t know if it will scan the W7 side of the hard dive??

Once that’s done I’ll run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and see what happens.

Is there a way to copy the anti-malware program to a disk and then run it in the W7 safe mode?

Just wondering, WHY would you have both XP and Win7?

Download MalWareBytes into a folder on your XP side. Then if you can see that folder from the win7 SafeMode side, then install it & run it.

The computer was built about 5 years ago and the builder suggested it. So far it's come in handy.

There is no best, I personally use ESET Smart Security 4. The one however, works with Malwarebytes PRO, and Hitman Pro 3.5. It's a combo. YOU have to use whatever works for you the best. For free Antiviruses, I would recommend Avast! Home Edition (Free), AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 and Avira AntiVir Personal-Free Antivirus. For paid, Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, ESET Smart Security 4, G-Data Products , and BitDefender Total Security 2011. I personally like ESET because its light, effective AND has potent protection against new viruses. Check ESET ThreatSense.Net. If you download frequently, I suggest you use programs like Kaspersky or BitDefender, but if you don't and you know the websites you visit are "harmless" then, I would stick with one of the free AV's I gave you. They're all good.
