    Hello baccini,
    Your question is ambivalent.... to this one. I don't use Defender.
    {The purpose of having an auto update facility turned on is to allow a program to do just that.}

    I would suggest you consider an alternative to Defender.

    Two free programs for you to check out & choose one from { if you are so inclined} are SuperAntiSpyware & Malwarebytes.
    Both work happily with Win 7.

    SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

    Malwarebytes : Download free malware, virus and spyware tools to get your computer back in shape!

    It makes perfect sense to me baccini.

    However with MS Update you can't selectively tell it which apps it should auto-update and which ones it should ask you about.

    You may want to consider MSE. If you update to MSE, it will combine both defender functions with an AV. MSE is updated 3X a day and if you set your Windows updates to auto install, it will update this. Also, you can manually hit the update button on MSE to make sure you have the latest updates....
