Windows 7: Restoring Windows 7 Log-in Password box

Restoring Windows 7 Log-in Password box

Hi there

I'm new to this forum but would be grateful for any help with an issue that I'm trying to resolve for an elderly relative's laptop.

I have an uncle who, at the tender age of 89 and having never previously even touched a keyboard, has bought himself a nice laptop and is taking to it all like a duck to water! Whilst I'm no IT expert I've owned PCs/laptops for many years, and so have been able to coach him in using basic MS software, email and use of the internet.

A couple of weeks ago whilst I was abroad, he received a telephone call from a company saying that they were 'Windows Support' and that they could 'see' that his laptop was infected with numerous malicious viruses, trojans, etc that could fatally harm it. Of course, my uncle panicked and to cut a long story short, with me being away, he fell for the company's line of being able to resolve these issues remotely for him by signing up to their support service. I've checked this out upon my return and it seems that this is quite a well-known scam going on. I'm trying to deal with this for him, but it looks as though he'll probably just have to accept that he was duped, and fleeced of 89.90...swines!

However, that aside, this is the issue that I would appreciate some help with; I have restored the Avira antivirus software to his laptop (that had been disabled for the past two weeks!) and deleted the software that the company had appeared to have loaded onto his machine, presumably to remotely operate it. But, the password log-in box that always appeared when booting into Windows no longer appears; it just loads up straight to his user profile. Obviously, this means that anyone booting up his laptop can use it. Please can anybody tell me how I can restore things so that, upon booting, the password box appears for the password to be able to be entered into it. I'm just trying to plug all the security gaps that might exist.

Thanks for any help, or direction to any page that covers this issue.
