I've used Avira Free on Win7 and I remember it helped me remove some nasty infections (gotten from the school lab). It was pretty decent for the time I used it. I'm on MBAM now though and I'm pleased with its performance considering it saved my laptop on several occasions.

When it comes to downloading installers, it's advised to get it from the official website whenever possible. I personally don't trust CNET so I go with FileHippo or SnapFiles if I have to get installers from a download site.
