Windows 7: Phone call PC SCAM

01 Aug 2011   #21

Just tied another one up for 20 minutes with my Ubuntu 11 scam

That was actually the third one of these calls I've had since my last post in this thread, but mostly they hang up within the first few minutes.

Barking and meowing on the phone when such people call also work very well...or blowing a sports whistle...

The next person to record the scam conversation and subsequent "put-down" of the scammer, and post it here for us to here, wins a free virtual donut.

It's funny you should suggest that because the recording equipment was delivered about 30 minutes ago

I feel left out, I have never received one of these calls.
Maybe I need to put my land line on the "do call" list.

Just got one of those calls .... again

Managed to keep him on the phone for 38min. I really laid it on thick and pretended to cry because my PC was so infected and I really needed it fixed.
He was so helpful telling me not to worry and that he could fix it for me, but you could tell he was getting a bit peed off when he kept telling me to click Start, and I kept on telling him "but I don't have Start" 10 min later after we had determined that I had windows 7 so he told me to click on the "round thing" at the bottom
Then another 10 min later after we struggled to navigate to the "windows" "inf" folder and he asked if I had any .pnf files. Of course there were loads (as there should be) He then said that my machine was badly infected.
Next thing was we had to open the Internet so he could remote my system, strung him on for another 10min telling him "but I don't have a blue e" We then figured out that I was using "google chrome"
By this time he was getting really frustrated and I was struggling to hold in my giggles.
So eventually I asked him what his profession was and he replied he was a senior technician, he then asked what job do I do, to which I replied in a fit of laughter "I'm an IT Manager" ........ click .... silence.
He didn't even give me chance to say thank you for starting my day off with such a laugh

I personally have never had one of these...but I would rather like one - although I don't have 20-30 minutes to string them on for, I am sure I could still have a little fun! Anyway, I was over at a relative's house a few days ago, fixing a broken PC (corrupt iPlayer cache) and was rather unlucky in that this relative received one of these calls as I was fixing an actual broken iPlayer. He had never actually had one of these calls before, and it took some convincing that it was a scam - and he was never totally convinced.

Latest scam call: Windows Refunds Dept
Called to land line here today. Last week it was "Windows Technical Support" claiming their servers were showing infection by Trojans on my PC. Sounded like a boiler room in the Phillipines. Answered yes when I asked if he works for MS, US when I asked his location. Hung up when I asked for his...

SCAM? Phone call from "Microsoft Windows Repair Support, Albany"
While experiencing issues with BSOD and inability to repair Windows, the Repair Tool pop-up when it discovers it can't fix the issue asks if I want to report this to Microsoft. I chose SEND, and continued banging my head against the desk. Couple of days into this foray and I get a call saying...

Interesting phone call
