From what I've seen, I would say there are more people around with infection problems while using MSE, then there are people with BSOD's using 3rd party protection.
my dad uses MSE but he was dissapointed it couldn't detect a rogue av.
I personally use Avast! antivirus Free.
I haven't had an infection in years. Of course I use noscript for my browsing and a little something called commonsense for everything else. Between those two I haven't any problems with my personal machine in years. MSE is mostly for show as I don't even let it run most the time.
Between just Ghostery and NoScript in my browser I'd basically have to intentionally allow something in for it to even be a worry.
And that's generally the case with most the infections I see, people just clicked yes when they shouldn't have or were trying to see something got in a hurry and weren't noticing redirects on links.
Out of all the fancy expensive AV's I'd say commonsense is by far the best protection available at any price.
This particular thread is about MSE though.
It's functional, and it doesn't block windows own system components.
My problem with most the 3rd party ones is their nagging.
User answers one question wrong and all the sudden they can't access the internet anymore.
The simplest solution is generally the best. If someone has a pattern of infection, they're probably going to get infected regardless of what they are using, because the problem is the user, not the software in play...
One of our corporate pc's just died with f*cking AVAST! installed ,good thing I was able to safemode+sys restore before it crashed again, I just installed MSE and Mbam then it lived again .
If you want to pay for an AV though I recommend ESET 5 :) best shit ever.
Avast and AVG have been common problem causers in the minidumps I've been seeing here. Norton a little less so, I can say I haven't seen a single problem from ESET yet. ...well not since back in the xp days.
Not everything is rosy with Avira, Markmental. See Avira AntiVir Adds Ask Toolbar and Scareware PopUp and the linked articles.
Are we down to just Mse and Panda now? Perhaps there is a bit of over reacting going onConflicts will happen with all apps from time to time, and Avast as well as the others will fix the issues. And if you think this cant happen with Mse
