It is 2 systems on a local area network running Windows 7.

One...count it, ONE shared folder on one machine.

The other system can sometimes access and see it, other times cannot.

No idea why and when...just whenever ESET's firewall decides to allow access.

As soon as I installed ESET smart security today, I experienced network file sharing issues. Searching for a solution, I came upon this post, but unfortunately, it didn't help.

After tinkering around with the firewall settings, I figured out how to enable file sharing accross my local network while maintaining ESET's firewall protection.

1. Switch to Advanced Mode by clicking Toggle Advanced mode in the lower left corner of the main window.
2. Click on Setup tab > Personal firewall > Advanced Personal firewall setup and make sure the filtering mode is set to Interactive mode.
3. Go to Rules and zones and click Setup under Trusted zone and make sure that Allow Sharing is checked. Click Setup under Zone and rule editor and click on Toggle detailed view of all rules
4. Uncheck the two following default rules; Block Incoming NETBIOS Requests and Block Outgoing NETBIOS Requests
5. Now create those two same exact rules again using any name of your choice by clicking New with the only difference that under Address you should only have Networks automatically marked as untrusted NOT All.

*** Please make sure that you have sharing enabled in Network Sharing Center.

Basically instead of blocking NETBIOS accross all networks including the Trusted, we're only blocking it on the public (untrusted) thereby allowing file sharing to function on your local network.

I just joined this forum specifically to post this, so I really hope it helps you guys

Not a fan of security suites, personally, but NOD32 v4 by itself works perfectly fine on Windows 7, so props to ESET for that. :)

Appreciate the post miroesq, but I've already given up on ESS. As mentioned, I"ve just got Nod32 installed now and Comodo. No extra tweaking or configuring needed for Comodo right out of the box. It just works, as ESS should. Not to mention I have a sour taste in my mouth with ESET now based on spending $110 and having them say "Sorry, you're running Windows 7...so we'll take your money, but we're not helping you."

Oh I know...I work in tech support.

But I also know being a programmer and having my own software company, that if someone had access to a new OS and was willing to test various things, I would work with them to try and get a headstart on supporting said OS. Not just say, sorry, we don't support that. They really passed up a great opportunity as far as I'm concerned. So be it I guess.

I found this to be true...have been using ESET your at least 4 yrs. and have both the Antivirus 4 running on daughter laptop and Smart Security 4 running on Vista then upgarded to Win 7 and the firewall from ESET didn't want to work, so just use the antivirus part...but I'm sure ESET will get this worked out now that they have a final version to work with.
