I have on occasion used the service & found the Techs to be polite, helpful, efficient - & given time a positive outcome was achieved..
    Good luck.

Ran the Win7 Pro 64bit cd to upgrade window files which was told normally fix the problem which of course it did not.

The only alternative is to re-install windows which I dread as a I do not have the cds for a number of applications. Told them I would think about it.

In the interim, I will make do with BlackBerry Desktop Manager ver 5.

I will let you know when I do decide to wipe my laptop.

    Update September 22

The good news is that I was able to install MS Visual C++2008 Redistributal after being on the phone with three Dell techs for five hours.

They finally decided to update the OS which took a few hours. During the update, the window displaying installation progress disappeared - tech finally called me back and said the installation had probably ended. He tried installing MS Visual which of course failed again. He advised updating the OS normally was successful 95% of the time and said because of this, the my hard drive would have to be reformated and OS being reinstalled. Told him I was not ready to do that. I rebooted and was surprised to see installation of update being continued (installation had not been completed). Finally once completed, I was able to install MS Visual. I also was able to install BlackBerry DM 6 albeit with a few problems. The problem now is that the DM does not recognize my BlackBerry. I uninstalled DM 6 and installed the old version which it also did not recognize my BlackBerry. I will get in touch with BlackBerry support and hopefully this saga will end successfully. I'm sure that Murphy's law is to blame!

I will update you guys again soon.

After spending several hours with Dell techs (yes, more than one), updating my OS, I was able to install MS Visual C++2008 Redistributable, was able to install DM6 and was able to log into DM and back up my 9900!!!!

The OS update took at least 3 - 4 hours. Techs used a uninstall applications which not only uninstalled previous DM's but also deleted left over files which I believe was causing the problems.

Installing the MS Visual and DM 6 went without a glitch - I hooked uip my 9900 and DM recognized it immediately.

    I'm a happy camper!

Thanks to all for your help.

    Thanks JMH for your comments.

I called Dell this morning to advise my problem was solved. Now that I have a CD for Win7 Pro 64bit and another for 32bit, if I encounter whereas some of the OS files become corrupted, I now know how to fix the problem.

I might in the future also decided to backup everything and do a fresh install. Of course, I will have to put a few days aside to reinstall my applications.

I laughed when the Dell tech tried to convince me to extend the software warranty on my old Dell 6400 laptop which is nearly four years old which would cost me US$270.00 - I told him it wasn't worth it as I could purchase a brand new laptop for a few $$ more - nice try but no cigar!

Thanks again and yes I will be browsing other posts to keep me up to date.

Don't blame him, they are told to ask those 'upcharge' questions. It's like when you go to the fast food drive thru already knowing exactly what you want and they try to sell you something else before taking your order.

It's not the guy on the microphone that decided he was going to do that to each and every customer, he was told to... and in fact may suffer repercussions if he does not.
