    What is \\.\C:\ ?

    Windows 7 Home Premium
When I scan with MSSE a scanned element appears lately that takes quite some scanning time, viz. \\.\C:\
I googled and looked elsewhere but cannot find anything on it.
Does anyone know what this is?
    Thanks.

What do you mean by a scanned element? Are you sure it isn't the C: drive? Also, as JDobbsy1987 has said below, a screenshot would definitely help.

    Hi,

Can you provide a screen-shot of this?

    \\. is the current folder
    \\c: is the c: drive

the length of time taken to scan these areas will depend on the actual contents of the locations concerned

    Thanks for the fast reply.
When I scan with MSSE the elements that are being scanned are displayed at the bottom and usually these are fly by very fast, i.e. the files are scanned very fast. This \\.\C:\ takes some time to be scanned by MSSE and it appears only lately, unless I have missed it up to now. No virus detected but I am just wondering what it is.

Ah, that would be the C: drive then. Your main hard drive.

Ok, thanks to all of you.
I am reassured; I thought it might have been some nasty progam someone installed on my computer.
Funny though that Goooogle does not give anything on it.
To JaidynM: I am using Linux Mint 10 in dual boot with W7, just for surfing. No mail program and no address book on it and it's amazing but I don't get any spam any longer.

    Hi FranzB,

\\.\C:\ is a Win32 Device Namespace for accessing physical disks and volumes directly without going through the file system, Information about it can be found on this document: Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces (Windows)

You might want to skip to the 'Win32 Device Namespaces' section

    Thanks for the link, Aegis.
I checked again by running the MSSE quick scan: total time ~ 3'30", time to scan the \\.\C:\ 1'30" and I can't remember ever seeing it before. Might be due to a recent MSSE upate (?).
    Thanks and regards ----------------
