"This file contained a virus and was deleted."

This is with Win 7 Pro 64

Both Firefox and IE9 are giving me this issue when I try to download a file. The file downloads all the way and then just gets eradicated. Not in the recycle bin, not in the virus vault.

Chrome does not have this problem, downloads are saving normally.

"This file contained a virus and was deleted." is the message I get from IE downloads, Firefox there is no message. Kind of an oddity is that this happens with mpgs, flv, avi, wmv on both browsers. IE lets me save jpgs and gifs but not Firefox.

It does this with AVG turned off as well. I have seen a couple of other people with this problem but no solution. Tried SCANNOW, creating new adminstrator account with no success.

This started after I had been having some warnings with a RAID 0 setup but was able to clone the drive to a new single C drive.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

If you have already downloaded the file using Firefox, and it is less than 20MB in size, upload it here and have it scanned:

VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner

    Hi,
It is any file with Firefox - mpg, avi. flv, jpg, png, zip etc. This happens if I download - or drag and drop a graphic - or right-click save-as.

IE9 will not allow the saving of any downloaded files except graphics (jpgs etc)

    Chrome downloads everything as normal.

    Hi,

Any file extension with Firefox. IE9 allows graphics to save but nothing else.

    Hi,

I ran this tool - very robust. It found some things that malwarebytes missed going back in some archives over a decade old. It also found some java crap in my Firefox profile but it did not solve the problem. The files download, but still get instantly zapped when Windows tries to save them, both in IE8 and Firefox.

Hi Mark2100 - I'm having the exact same problem as you. Both Firefox and IE9 do this, but Chrome and Opera do not.

Just to eliminate some more suggestions:

    • Yes, it still happens in safe mode
    • Yes, it still happens with a clean boot (disabling just about everything in msconfig)
    • Yes, it does happen with zero antivirus installed (including disabling windows defender)
    • Yes, it still happens with the most dangerous system config in Internet Explorer (running all unisigned controls, staying out of protected mode, setting my "test" download site to trusted...)
    • I've done a malware bytes scan, no results, and an Avast! scan, no results. Same with MSE.
    • System Sweeper found nothing

The only change/install I remember doing recently was an upgrade of the Zune software from Windows Update. Aside from that the most recent Windows update was the .net patch from August.

As an addition, nothing is referenced in the system, application or security logs.

Welcom to Seven Forums Devan, you should start a separate thread for your self.

If either of you have Avast! security and updtaed in the last 3 days that could cause this. As a check, uninstall any AV, malware firghter, etc., and install Ms Security Esentials, see my sig for link. Do a FULL scan after updating definitions.
