The FREE Malwarebytes is an on demand scanner.
It only runs when you open the program and click SCAN.
The pay version of Malwarebytes can be run as a full time scanner.
As far as I know the paid version of Malwarebytes will run side by side with Avast.
I have not heard of problems but you can check on the Avast and the Mbam forums and they may have more info.
I am running AvastIS with the free Mbam with no problems but I have not tried it with pay version.

For the benefit of anyone searching this. Yes, I run Avast with MalwareBytes Pro and SuperAntispyware Pro all together with no conflicts. A Guy
SourceMalwarebytes technology takes the next step in the fight against malware. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO detects and removes malware where even the best known anti-virus and anti-malware applications fail.

The Proactive Protection Module keeps your system safe and secure with advanced heuristic scanning technology. The comprehensive Threats Center keeps you up-to-date with the latest malware threats.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO Features include:
- Flash - Lightning fast scan speeds
- Thorough - Full scans for all drives
- Works Well With Others - Cooperative functionality
This information is for the Malwarebytes Pro version which has real time scanning. In other words, it is designed to work side by side with your antivirus/antispyware of choice. Over the years I've tested it with Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Avast, AVG, and others. Never had any conflicts.
I am also using MBAM along with Avast and I haven't experienced any problem at all with their performances.
It'll work just fine. I've been using Malwarebytes with BitDefender for a few months now without any problems. The only problem you may encounter though is when installing avast!, it might detect and try to uninstall MBAM. If this is the case, you will have to uninstall avast! and then instal MBAM before installing avast! again.
