Look,MSE is free and great AV. Maybe I can say one of the best free AV'ses. I think that Kaspersky also have free version, but I don't know how it's working good. I was using KIS 2009 with licence, and it was good. It's slowing down the pc sometimes because it has a lot of processes in background. But in your case, I see that you have good pc and you will not have that problems.
If you don't need big protection, you can use MSE,but if you need good protection, you can buy Kaspersky and use it.
Well yes,in fact non of the AV'ses will impact on the performance if you have great conf. , but for lower conf. it will. :)
I had exactly the same dilemma some time ago... And I have shosen MSE with Comodo Firewall. I like the fact that MSE runs quetly and flowlessly in the background (I hardly notice that is even there) and I like Comodo since it asks me to allow programs to connect to Internet. Whereas KIS have build-in firewall which does not ask me for anything ( I did not like that feature)... purely my opinion... decision is yours... Good luck!
I would not recommend MSE if you're planning to do a lot of online activities involving a lot of downloads, it won't protect you against some online attacks. I've seen several PCs getting infected even with MSE installed. But it does the job when it comes to usual usage. Being a past user of Kaspersky I'd say that its worth the money.
Just another thought. The best way to protect yourself is with regular imaging. On one of my systems where I use MSE (because I already am using NIS on 3 other systems) I caught nasties twice (keyloggers). Although I was able to flush them out with SuperAnti Spyware, they left some damage behind. Luckily I had recent images and was able to fix the problem in no time.
Another good idea is to have your data in a seperate partition. That does not only speed up imaging but also helps to keep your data current when you have to set the system back. And user data gets very rarely infected - in fact, I personally know of no case where that happened.
You usually can find full rebate offers on AV software...like at newegg.com or frys.com.
MSE is a heavy antivirus with a not-so-good detection rate. It consumes like ~50mb or more of memory thus, I don't recommend this for computers with poor specifications particularly on RAM. There are lots of better security software or security combinations which are even lighter, and are way too effective than MSE. Research for it on Google and you'll see but if ever you need help, don't hesitate to come back here and I'll be willing to help you out.
As to Kaspersky, it's another heavy security solution. In fact, we call it the "Elephant". It's not recommended for computers with poor specs like MSE but its features, technologies, benefits and most of all, its detection rates are very good.
