Is it safe to disable Win7 firewall ?

    Hi

I've had many woes with my Logitech Duet network music system - lots of "no IP address" and "no valid DHCP.." messages.

This was using the SqueezeServer software music server on my Win 7 netbook.

    I disabled Win 7 Firewall & AVG.

This seemed to cure the issue (even after AVG had reenabled itself).

Is it safe for me to leave the Firewall off ? Won't the modem/router hardware firewall be adequate ?

    thanks

If you have a hardware firewall then it is ok.
You could also just configure win firewall to allow
    your program.

I would replace AVG bloatware with the preferred freeware Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 6 with the Win7 firewall.

Why don't you configure it with a fixed IP and then allow that IP through the firewall.

    Hi, swayak.

In the event a backdoor trojan gets on your computer (particularly if you are in the practice of disabling your A/V), your modem/router will not provide protection from outbound threats -- reaching out to its servers and sending goodies home as well as downloading more of its friends.

Also, if your computer is on a home network and another computer in the household gets infected with a worm, the software firewall should protect your computer by detecting and blocking the unauthorized network connection.
