I occasionally run various virus scans, and have played around with these (all free):
- PC Tools firewall : seems pretty good, not detailed enough in some respects (personal opinion).
- Threatfire : nasty interface that's hard to use; not sure if it's true HIPS or not.
- Old sygate firewall : a very nice firewall but out of date (IIRC won't install on Win 7)
- Old Tiny firewall : as above
...and now sometimes switch between these in "high alert" modes, which all do pretty well w/Matousec:
- Comodo CIS free (w/o anti-virus) : complete solution, works well, pretty EZ 2 use, bigger footprint lately, "Help" no longer matches GUI, too many Trusted Vendors.
- PrivateFirewall : small footprint, reliable, HIPS + FW. Recomended! GUI makes it hard to copy info to look up...
- Malware Defender : great, except it can't tell if an approved file has changed. It found some suspicious .sys entries in the registry that nothing else noticed.
I never trust any MS software, so it's all turned off; currently using Malware Defender only.
Update* After the 5th day using it, I started to find problems, like shutdown delays and system crash caused by bitdefender. I tried reinstall it many times but the problems appeared again. Bitdefender Internet security has a great protection but it did slow down my system and the internet. So I am going back to Microsoft security essentials. SO now I have Microsoft security essentials and windows 7 firewall as my system security setup
