Windows 7: Which lightest antivirus you used in recent days

23 Dec 2011   #11

Windows 10 Pro x64, Arch Linux

I would say Norton Internet Security.
It uses about 14MB of RAM when idle and will peak at 25MB when doing scans.

Hardly any of the choices seem to bog down moderate to high end powered systems any longer.

I'm adding another vote for NOD32, and am doing so because it identified risks better than everything else I've tested and sits there unobtrusively, silently updating itself 3-4 times a day, without asking for much user intervention at all.

RAM resources seem to be 'eaten up' at just 3.5Mb during an actual scan of a drive, and at around 70% less when sitting there in background mode.

Win7 Pro SP1 x64

MSE so far satisfies me. I been using NOD32 for several years, but when i got my laptop with Win 7, MSE is the best AV for me, along with MBAM...

Microsoft MVP

Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8

NIS2012 is the best in my book. Used MSE earlier but caught a virus twice. And I don't want to tell you my free AVG saga - hands off.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1

the fastest and lightest av i ever used was Eset until i started playing with Webroot SecureAnywhere. WSA is the lightest and fastest AV i ever used. Doesn't take up much resource and has a lightning fast scan.

Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit

MSE followed by Avast free (sadly, Avast free has become feature bloated).

Windows 10 64bit

Comodo internet security only using 3,944k and the other one says around 6,912k,not too bad. Was a avast user but been trying this one out even though it's still in testing stages but the firewall is excellent and the scanner ain't to bad. I comodo getting better in the future,so far liking it. Only down side I have seen atm is that the scans do take a while but it's not intensive on the system.

Its true, the "suites" have much lighter footprints now. A few years ago I would never use a suite, now I am using Norton Security Suite from comcast w/o constant guard and it good, I was very surprised at the small footprint, still for some it still might be much but I have been convinced. Prior to that I used MSE which I liked too. Right now it's at 5K, their offering a few years ago would be 25-30K.

Whats the very lightest AV program out there?
I've googled and googled but all I could find is outdated or vague info. I'm on a old P4 desktop with only 3 GBs ram available, the PC is sluggish as it is so Im looking for the minimalist AV possible. I already have MBAM for malware detection, now I just need a AV for real-time protection.

Lightest possible apps and performance tweaks for old machine?
I've got a ten year old netbook, powered by a mobile p3/800 and a paltry 256mb of ram, some of which it has to share with the GPU. The XP it was running finally gave up so I just rebuilt it with 7 (which wasn't trivial due to the un-startable HDD, non-booting USB ports and lack of optical drive),...

Having descided to not renew my Eset nod32 v.4 (good product, horrible tech support and tough to cleanly uninstall) I am looking @ the sheer speed of a malware client. I've used them all over the years. Currently I am looking @ Avast or Avg. Which do you fine fellow 7 users find more efficient in...
