That's how I first used it.
But i got tired of seeing the "Updates Available" icon.
I also wanted these updates applied more than once per day without me doing anything (lazy)...
I do still use scheduled daily scans, but added the scheduled task for the updates.
WU icon?? I have mine set to only show notifications so it appears for a few seconds. Usually when I log on and maybe one other time during the day. Otherwise it is hidden. And I think that's only because I have other updates pending. Since MSE updates are optional I'm not sure it would even appear if that was the only update available.

I use "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar".

    Maybe that is a difference?

Yep that would do it. I only set three to show all the time. The rest just show up when they have something to tell me.

    Got it.

My primary is an HTPC with full screen HD TV running, and I have the taskbar "on top" of the TV.

I want to be able to see any status info, preferably by icon changes/animations, so the TV/Video is not blocked/interrupted.

And, anything can be run/launched from the taskbar...(commercial skip ).

....I can change a pc to check every hour if you want?...
Thanks, but no need. That was done during the year+ that I had update failures on several XP computers. Now that I know that I have to create/leave an extra temp folder, I've set them all to scan/update each night.

An MS dev going by the name of Philip claims that MS fixed this temp folder issue in July 2010 but it is still a problem as of Jan 2011 and beyond.
