My recommendations, Microsoft Security Essentials (I think this has replaced Forefront and its free compared to priced).

Id also recommend nod32 either just their av or their security.

btw defender isnt av, its just malware.
Actually Forefront is a paid-for Business grade antivirus. It isnt free, and is not replaced by MSE. MSE is a free antivirus for consumers.

Also, my poll asks which security software. Sorry about the confusion, the post asks about antivirus, but i wanted to include defender in case anyone used it with Avast or another standalone antivirus w.o malware protection.

Avira is fine but my god when you install it and try to update the definitions it takes bleedin ages Now I use Avast and it works fine for me.
Really I haven't had that issue with avira in a long time. I think the last time I had that problem was a version or 2 ago.

Strange. MSE won't install in XP Mode, saying it failed the validation check.

it all boils down to personal preference. there are a lot good av programs around. it comes down to a few factors. paid for or free, interface, resources, level of knowledge (basic or advanced). no anti-virus software is 100% reliable. you need to do some research and choose one that is right for you. I use NOD32 but if i discovered another program that did what i want better, i would switch.

I user Trend Worry free on my Server and workstations. So far so good, the only issue I've had is voice communications using MSN. Disabling the proxy service fixed that.
