Hi all,

I recently installed Windows 7 Final after i got the iso from my school-provided msdn account, but while i was searching through other software, I noticed Microsoft Forefront Client Security. I downloaded and installed it in place of Avast! antivirus, which i had been using for years.

My question is: as a student here, i have free access to Microsoft Forefront and McAfee antivirus, as well the free version of Avast!; Which software do you recommend i run, and why?

I picked Forefront since I use Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 with Windows Firewall.

Can't go wrong with those two :).

I've got to say, i used avast for years and it never failed me, but then again most people that are smart about their internet habits can probably avoid viruses.

But one thing i do like about Microsoft Forefront is that it idles at 6MB of ram, and when running a full scan it takes ~6MB of memory and at most 5% of my CPU load.

However, i can't speak for the other programs specifically, but i do know that avast uses around ~30MB of memory, and McAfee is a hog last time i checked.

Nah dude Norton is faster, uses less than 6MB of RAM, MUCH more updates (when I say MUCH more, I mean it!)
And detection rate...Havent looked at recent test.

I'd also like to see some reputable website's review of NOD32, or of any of the antivirus programs listed here; please post links if you find them!

EDIT: I need to do a little more research, but i dredged this up pretty quickly

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/2009-antivirus-test,review-1315.html

They say that the best free antivirus is Avira AntiVir; however, i have never used it and am reluctant to switch from Microsoft's professional antivirus (i get it for free) to it.

At this point, my need for a thorough antivirus protection is minimal; i mostly need something for that "Just in case" or if someone else's files are contaminated. I think McAfee and Norton both seem like overkill.

I use AVG Free on my computer and Avast on my wife's laptop. I like them both because they are free. And we are pretty safe web surfers...so it hasn't been a problem if they don't catch everything (because neither do we).

Hello gamepro, i guess you'rei in a misconception that Norton uses just 6 MB. Open taskmgr and click "Show processes From All Users". Now check how Norton is eating RAM in breakfast, unch and dinner. :)

eset NOD32 has consistently proven itself as the best av software available. it has recieved Virus Bulletin's VB100 logo in all but 3 tests since 1998. Norton failed the most recent test and was not awarded with their logo. Kaspersky has failed 17 times. Avast has failed 23 times. No software has passed more times than NOD32.
