    HitmanPro 3 - SurfRight

It's free for scanning, but not for cleaning (except for a free trial period when/if needed)

    Additional Scan

A second opinion scanner to use after MBAM free?

Hitman Pro gets my vote but also I make regular use of:

    Emsisoft Emergency Kit

    It's highly configurable.

    Microsoft Security Scanner

On demand scanner that expires after 10 days and needs to be downloaded each time it's used.

    Emco Malware Destroyer

    Lightning fast on demand scanner.

    My personal favorite:

    UVK

Contains built in scanners but you can also add as many third party scanners as you like and run them.

I looked through all of the settings pages and it doesn't have the option anymore to update versions automatically like 1.75.... used to have ?

Looks like I'll have to monitor it for a day or two and see if it switches on a daily scheduled update
    Thanks,
    Cheers.
Mike, did your MBAM alert you to a new version available yet ?

My TEST box does not alert me of the new version available, as of 10/17/2014.
My PRIMARY box does alert and nag me to update, and has for several days now.
I have paid real-time version 2.0.2.1012 on both of these PCs.

I would like to see if a program update from within the program works on my TEST box...
I don't want to test this on my PRIMARY box.

I've had issues in the past updating to a new version, and would like to see if that is now fixed.
A failed program update forced me to do a mbam-clean and re-install to get it working.

I asked specifically about opinions on a substitute for MBAM free not things like ADWCleaner. Which one would you consider worthy of a "Lastest Version of xxx" thread to.

Substitute, or next best? I think MBAM is exemplary. Next on my list is Superantispyware, then Emsisoft. But it's like asking what's best after CCleaner. CCleaner (and MBAM) are still the head of the class

There is no best, only the right tool for the task at hand.

That is like asking what the best antivirus is....

Any secondhand scanner will do, its called a second hand scanner as it is giving you another opinion.

Going off the fact that malwarebytes is antimalware, not strictly antispyware like superantispyware or toolbar/spyware hunter like adwcleaner, I suggest looking into something like the following: (none being the "best")

    -hitman pro
    -herdprotect
    -uvk
    -emsisoft

They are comparative to what malwarebytes might looks for; but of course nothing will ever be a silver bullet. And each company has different heuristics and definitions/methods.
And of course, some of the tools mentioned are not for the faint of heart. They are certainly not a scan and remove anything found kind of thing. Arguably no program is like that.

Have fun looking, or grab them all :)

Well spyware, antivirus or whatever - call it what you will etc etc it is all malware to me just a different names for a different sorts of attack / intrusion.

I think personally this is turning into a pedantic and nit picking exercise and we should all agree to share what knowledge we have collectively and not just pin it to any specific type of malicious software.

This forum is after all like someone said the other day a team effort and we cannot agree with each other that there are ratbags out there wanting to disrupt or make out lives a misery by intruding into our or anyone else's machines and share what we advise people to do then it is a poor show as far as I am concerned. I know that everyone has their own particular likes and dislikes but it should not be made its some sort of playground activity to prove that anyone knows better than anyone else.

There is no infallible anti malware program and we should all agree at least on that - no matter what the survey people put out and in my mind the best AV is sitting in front of the keyboard.

Talk about sitting on the fence and not answering the question. I was clearly asking for opinions.
    Ok let's be specific:
Functionality: What MBAM FREE provides (in principle).
Operation/installation: No major problems as outlined above in the issues reported by posters plus reasonable speed definition file updates.
Substitutes: What's the next best option in your opinion.

Maybe the next advice you give generally should be
    "grab them all"
