I am running McAfee Total protection and it works fine on Win7 x64 RTM Ultimate.

    @ Dinesh
You could simply restore the files and add them as "trusted" to avoid the problem.

I guess you are using the 2009 version. There is no such option in mcafee total protection 2010.

There beta of 2010 appears to be W7 compatible - but they are also selling their 2009 product in boxes labeled 2010. the 09 version isn't W7 compatible.

See Is McAfee selling 2009 products in a 2010 box? - Security
They've always done that when the versions are about to change. Those relabelled 2009 ones will get the upgrade automatically as soon as it available.

The 2009 products ARE Windows 7 x64 and x86 compatible FYI.

You can only tell VirusScan to trust a PUP (possible unwanted program). We have been campaigning for years to persuade them to reintroduce the "ignore a file" feature, which still exists in the Corporate products, in vain unfortunately.

See this post at the McAfee Forums regarding this kind of thing: "Artemis" & Other Possibly False Detections - McAfee Support Forums

Disabling the 2010 VirusScan in order to restore a file is a bit different from how it is described there but doable easy enough.

Man My old school used the 2006 version and it used at least 200MB for the shield (avshield.exe, I think).
    Glad to see some improvements.
When I look at AntiVirus in terms of resources, I really dont care about RAM as long as its under 50MB. I care about CPU usage. Mcafee is always high on CPU. Just load a program with task manager open and see how much CPU it uses, same with Vipre. NOD32 is VERY good at CPU.
Amazingly enough, Norton Internet Security 2010 is very light on memory and CPU. I've been using it for 2 weeks now and I'm going to go ahead and buy it. Symantec has convinced at least one prior "never again Norton" type!

    Hi there

I think this product only still exists because in the earlier days it had a huge chunk of the corporate market and these people rarely change Software even if there's MUCH better (and cheaper) stuff around.

Any decent AV software should be almost INVISIBLE both in size and in resource usage - while doing the job its supposed to.

Of course it can protect a computer - but by locking the user out.

This plus Symantec stuff are not on my Xmas shopping list. (or Xmas Wish list).

    Cheers

I dont recommend Mcafee products either. Too heavy on resources.

    Hi all
I don't have shares in or any affiliation with MS - so no "ulterior motive" here
but of all the stuff I've seen posted in this section of the Forum I'd recommend MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) or Frontside Client security.

MS is now taking security very seriously indeed now (about time) and so far seems to be doing a decent job at it by all accounts. Databases are also updated very frequently and both products I've mentioned use hardly any resources and are very easy to use.

I'll be interested in say 12 - 18 months time to look back on these posts and see how many of the current companies having FREE AV software are still around or apart from MS how many of them are still in business.

    Cheers
    jimbo.
