Redirect Virus Removal
I (from instructions on Yahoo! Answers) found my 'specs' and have a
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Toshiba
Satellite L305
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2390 @ 1.86GHz (2CPUs), ~1.9GHz
3072MB RAM
1403MB used, 4718MB available
DirectX11
I hope that helps. I apparently got a redirect virus. First I thought it was the 'scour' virus, and was always redirected to scour. But then, after a while, it started to redirect to other sites as well, when I tried to go to Yahoo! Answers I was redirected to 'nixxie answers' [that might be misspelled]. Now I am not a techy person, and I have been searching online for a while. Please note that I did all of these things before I joined this forum and read not to use combofix on my own.
Between when I first got the virus [about a week ago, maybe more]and now:
1) I ran a malwarebytes and security essentials, both came up with nothing
2) I downloaded and ran TDSSkiller from Kaspersky [it also came up clean]
3) I downloaded and ran Combofix [it also came up clean]
4) I downloaded and ran 'MiniToolbox' with the following checked:
Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content o Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed programs
List Devices []Only Problems []No Driver [checked]All
List Users, Partitions and Memory Size
List Minidump Files
List Restores Point
5) I can't remember how, but I somehow managed to go into the file "Hosts"
and [following YouTube instructions] checked for a line under some number
there was only one and I was told to delete it
6) I checked my internet settings for both IE and FF and neither had the
proxy box checked
7) More repetitive running of combofix, TDSSkiller, and malwarebytes [both in safe
mode and normal mode] seemed to cure it
8) It came back and I uninstalled IE
9) All was well until yesterday, when it started happening on FF as well
Any help would be much appreciated and I'm really sorry if I worsened the problem with my neanderthal tinkering and lack of knowledge. On a side note, I've read
the virus can remember your passwords and personal information. I've logged in
3 times to my business email [the one with my 'real' non-anonymous information] since then, what kind of danger am I in here?
