Yeah that is true but then you get things like false positives happening etc. IMHO its better to stop them getting on your pc in the first place by using a sandbox type application rather than using an antivirus and relying on its signature database.

Dont get me wrong i still use an antivirus, i install one every few months and do a scan of the pc then i uninstall it. In 2 and a half years of me using Greenborder, no antivirus iv installed has found anything but i still do this for peace of mind.

I visit any site i want to even well known dodgy sites in safety.

Hi Dinesh your a "Security Freak" so have you tried any sandbox type applications. Theres ones like sandboxie, defensewall etc available.

Iv never tried those ones as im happy with my free for life Greenborder but i honestly believe they are better aproach to securing a pc than any Antivirus available. Preventing the threat instead of removing it is the best plan.

Ah i see Dinesh. I run greenborder all the time inside Virtual PC with XP installed. That is how i access the internet. I understand lots of people would be unwilling to do this but apps like sandboxie and defensewall run on windows 7 i think.

Those are the programes that should be recommended to the average user as they are the ones that click on everything and dont fully know the threats and what they do to a pc. Just my opininion

Why not do all the security etc on a Linux box and if your W7 connects to the internet through the Linux system you can remove pretty well all the AV software OFF the windows box which makes it run a lot better (and safer).

Start something like vmware server on a Linux machine which will fire up say 2 VM's -- one just a "virus" firewall and another is your user W7 machine.

Works an absolute treat and the overhead is minimal.

BTW this method is no good if you are a serious gamer -- but other video apps and streaming run quite nicely now on most Linux distros.

I'm waiting until MS'es security suite is out in the public domain.

I don't like typical AV softwear currently --usually slows the machine down and the false positive indications are a real nuisance.

In any case since the Linux system has really good controls over who can access the machine from OUTSIDE I'm not worried in any case.

My email server scans incoming emails and if I don't know where its coming from thenI just "Bin it" without even opening it.

The sort of sites I access on the Internet aren't likely to be riddled with Viruses -- I'm sure logging on to library sites studying such things as the materials used in the construction of modern aircraft engines aren't going to be infested with sub teen hackers wanting to test their "skills".

If you are a rabid downloader of "Torrent" music or a big user of P2P file sharing etc then over to you.

In all the years that I've been doing computing I've NEVER had a problem with Viruses.
