Sure, it's possible. To prove it, I turned off realtime protection and took a snip:

I just downloaded the Win 7 x64 version and it is 1.0.1959.0 and was 7355 KB compared to the old ver which is 4832 KB. When I installed it the came up as an update.
I now have:
Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1959.0
Antimalware Client Version: 2.1.6519.0
Engine Version: unknown - where do I find this info???
Antivirus definitions: 1.77.0.0
Antispyware definitions: 1.77.0.0
It seems to take longer to scan but went from 67000 items to 75000 items scanned.
There are two files msseoobe.exe and msseooberes.dll that were also updated and these may have been damaged causing the event error you had.
Jim
I just did another scan with MSE and it was back to its fast pace and back to 68000 items scan. Apparently the first time it is installed or updated it marks some files as safe and skips them in future scans. I hope MS knows what they are doing because I don't.
Jim
Thanks. I will do a coplete full scan now and see what happens.
So far I still have the older version.
Do a mouse over on the downloaded file and it should give you the version.

I received notice my NOD from ESET was about to expire so I downloaded MSE. As with the Beta of MSO 2010 it wouldn't run. I ran as Admin so dowloaded a second time. Ran OK and installed. I ran a scan as recommended and after about 15 minutes I noticed it had hung on a file. No movement after another 15 minutes so I did a reboot.(Ctrl/Alt/Del did nothing) Got the usual error about improper shutdown but Win7 did not "find a solution". Ran another scan and this was fine. I did notice the first scan hung on a ZoneAlarm file. Possible conflict? We will see. My NOD would nail an email about twice a month. I hope MSE works as well. I've only had 2 nasty virus attacks that succeeded since I've had a PC. Those were not fun.

Information
New public version available again.
1.0.1961.0

I just install the latest version and it was 1.0.1961.0. My main complaint is the download file name has not changed and nowhere on their site do they tell you what version you are downloading. After downloading you can mouse over it and it shows the version.
Airbot, where did you get the information about the new versions?
I don't want to have to download the file every time just to check the version for updates.

From various external sites, or checking myself. If I posted about a new version here, then you'll know what the new version is without having to download it to check, cuz I've already checked before I posted the info.
Or you can probably just upgrade your current version from the help menu of your already installed MSE version. Then it will show you in the about window.

Thanks Airbot. That HELP icon had me confused. When I clicked on HELP it took me to the web site. I then noticed the little down arrow next to HELP and found the other choices. They could of made that a little clearer.

It's a little confusing, but yeah, it shows an "Upgrade" option there in the help menu.

Although my version is 1.0.1611.0 when I select upgrade from the help menu it reports back that I am already using the latest version. (Windows 7 x64)
