Hello all,

I have installed Nod32 4.0, does MSE worth it? If so I will get it but I am always doubtful about the performance of AV freewares, even if they come from Microsoft Corp.

I have been following a thread at DSL reports about this topic - A user there got this from MS ' I had sent an email to the MSE support team and got a reply back today. In part, here's what they said....

From your case description, I understand that you are concerned about Definition updates on Microsoft Security Essentials which is done using Windows update. If I have misunderstood, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Tony, please be assured our developers do recognize this issue and are working on it. As this issue has been hard-coded in the program, it will take us some time to modify it. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we are working on this.

Main thread Microsoft Security Essentials only using Windows Update now? - dslreports.com
Hmmm...I didn't even realize Microsoft changed this because I have Windows Update set to download and install critical updates automatically.

And before we go there, I've been doing the auto updates for years (since XP) and never had an issue.
Same here .. I much prefer it that way to be honest! How very un-fashionable of us!!

OK we have a fix. After MS worked on my PC for 4 hrs they got it fixed. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Essentials\Support and delete MSSEOOBE.etl and reboot. After reboot this file should be recreated and the error should be gone. I have found that when you delete MSE this folder remains and the files get updated when you run MSE. It looks like the one file was not updating properly and causing the failure. After it was working I did another test. I deleted MSE and also all the files in the Support directory. I then reinstalled MSE and everything is still fine. If you look at the error under Detail it will point to this file.

Jim

Thanks Jim
This will go down in my special notebook for Win7

WELL ITS BACK. Same OOBE error has returned. Had a note from another forum and someone there had it return also. I deleted the MSSEOOBE.etl file again and it cleared for the next boot but came back again. Was also getting event error about needing an update but I was up to date. So I have now DUMPED MSE and using AVAST. May give it a try if they come out with a new version, but for now Forget About It.

Wow this thread went dead.

Just wanted to update that recently, MSE has been updating itself w/o Windows Update annoying me each morning with an update. My MSE version is still 1.0.1961.0 but it all seems to be working how it should be.

I was also thinking the same thing about this tread.
I have been using MSE since December 2009 and I'm still impresses with how well it works.
Light weight, does the job and updates with little effort.
Still FREE from Microsoft and can't see why anyone would need to purchase annual licences each year for anything else.
This is still a true winner for MS.

Yes now MSE has been updating itself without having Windows Update pop up an annoying daily popup reminder. Looks like MS changed this internally because my MSE version is still the same. So its back to updating itself daily, on its own without intervention from the user. This is done regardless of the Windows Update setting.
