I've just been invited to take a survey to qualify for the ongoing beta of MSE - testing new builds before the general public..

The beta begins in November.

Taken the survey now, boy is it long..

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS

Free, easy, and as old as the internet.
Ok, I've deleted this file, now what? LOL Just kidding! But seriously, what do I do with this?

Populate it.

hosts file - Google Search

Hosts file - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An easy tool is HostsMan - abelhadigital.com

When you type in www.screwmeover.com or ANY URL, windows first queries the HOSTS file for the IP address. If screwmeover is listed, windows gets the IP from there. If not listed, the request is sent to your DNS server.

When used for protection and/or ad/banner blocking, the HOSTS file references the URL to an IP of 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1. This means your PC. The browser will return Page Not Found.

When using tools like HostsMan or any publicly provided HOSTS file entries, it is common for websites that you want to go to to be blocked. MySpace is an example. Edit the file to suit your needs. A # as the first character on a line disables the entry.

That's slightly funny. As you will learn from the Wiki, HOSTS is older than Windows. And DOS. And PCs.

I populate it on every machine I am authorized to touch.

Yes it does. You should only have one anti-virus running at a time anyways, they tend to trip each other up.

I am thinking of putting MSE on my mom's new computer I built. Is it going to be a pretty good "set up and leave" app? I normally do virus scans with Avast or AVG once a week. Is this program worth using? From what I hear....it is looking good.

Any major problems with it? For a free app, it sound pretty good.

I was running NIS 2010 (which is pretty good) but since I reinstalled windows last week I have switched to MS Forefront for 7 and MSE for XP Mode. To be honest MSE is quite impressive for being free and even though Forefront seems a little older GUI-wise they seem to use the same definitions so the engines must be the same. They are both quick and light on resources, though I'll give Forefront the slight edge. Worth looking into MSE if you want to save some $$ and don't mind loosing some features of the all-in-ones

Is Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall enough Security?
Is the above enough security or should I be going for an anti-virus program as well?
