Checking reviews is okay but they change almost daily. What is the best can be discussed for years. So I will just tell what works for me.
    Microsoft Security Essentials (active) (free)
Windows 7 built in Firewall (active)
Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro (active) (not free)
Super Anti Spyware (on demand) (free)
Filehippo Update Checker (on demand) (free)

ESET is well regarded - if it works for you, and you are intent on paying for that protection, then stay with it.

I personally would go with Kaspersky all the way, it's one of the best known antiviruses out there. ESET seems to be fine too, but I have no real experience with it.
Anyway, what about just downloading the trial versions of all of them and trying them in virtual machines? So you can compare them yourself and decide based on your needs.

You can go with MSE and get a paid one if you feel that it doesn't cover your needs MSE is pretty solid I also use Secure anywhere spysweeper with Anti virus to me this program is sweet because it doesn't bog you down or take to many resources to run while multi tasking

it's not expensive like Norton or Kaspersky and a few others that are out there this version is the one i use and is effective and been so for 5 years now Newegg.com - Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013 - 3 Devices

this is the other version well rated as well Newegg.com - Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013 - 5 Devices
