    spybot s&d

I know a lot of users of this forum don't like using spybot but I do. For some reason I can't get it to install on my laptop. I have it on my desktop. On my laptop it just wont install. A quick error message pops up...something about uninstall/something and then shuts down and closes out. Any body run into this and is there a solution to this.

Haven't used it in many years now, sorry. What does it want you to uninstall? Have you had it on your machine before? If so maybe some left over pieces of it are preventing the installation? Also if MAY want you to disable your A/V for installation, but I would STRONGLY advise against that. Even if you do get it installed I wouldn't activate tea timer ...... thats assuming it still has that "feature".

Why don't you try the newest 2.0.12.0 version instead of the outdated 1.6.2 version?

I did but they changed the one and only feature that I liked. The ability to turn software off at start up. It was like Norton when Norton first came out, it did it's job and worked. Now with this new 2.0 vs of spybot it's bloated with tons of crap that's not needed. A real shame..

You might try installing it in safe mode. If it needs the windows installer running, you can enable that in safe mode with SafeMSI

By the way, you can disable startup programs with CCleaner too.

I have Spybot 1.6.2 installed in my Windows 7 Ultimate and it seemed to install fine but remember to disable the "Teatime". the teatime is rather useless to have running since IMO spybot is a cleaner and spybot only used when your removing stuff. Also remember to save a copy of your hosts file cause Spybot drops a rather nasty huge host file that does bog things down a bit. I just removed the spybot host file and replaced it with the old one I saved.
Right click and running as Administrator or changing the compatibility to XP might help in the installing but the 1.6.2 should install on win7, as it did on mine.
Ya...spybot isn't what it use to be. It was a kickazz program back in the day but I'm now not sure. Its scan seems to take a rather long time with 850,000+ definitions and still seems to find nothing isn't reassuring of the programs quality. I'll stick to CCleaner, Malwarebytes to do my dirty work and the occasional recommendation from a fellow forum member to try something new in the neverending fight we have against malware
